To find out the type of insurance coverage included in the price of the vehicle you have selected, consult the "General Conditions" visible both during the booking phase and after the purchase.
Car rental companies generally offer three types of insurance coverage (Damage Waiver (CDW), Theft Protection and Civil Liability (RCA)) whose cost varies depending on the country, company, travel duration and vehicle type.
The possibility of purchasing all or some of the insurance coverage during the booking phase may depend on the country of destination and the car rental company; for example, you may only be able to purchase them exclusively over the counter at the time of collection.
Below is a description of the main insurance coverage mentioned above:
- Damage Liability Limitation (CDW): protects you in case of damage to the vehicle. The maximum amount that you will have to pay in the event of a claim is defined by the excess value always visible at the time of booking and indicated on your car rental voucher. Keep in mind that the Damage Liability Limitation varies by rental company and therefore, for example, some policies also cover any damage to the car roof, while others do not. The Damage Liability Limitation is valid only if you respect the terms of the rental agreement that you sign at the time of collection.
- Theft protection: in case of theft you will generally have the possibility to collect another vehicle at no additional cost. Also in this case, a deductible may be provided and the protection is valid only if the terms of the rental agreement that you sign at the time of collection are respected.
- Civil Liability (RCA): anyone who hires a car must have a civil liability policy. The RCA coverage is in fact intended to cover damage caused to third parties or to their property during the rental; therefore, it does not cover your vehicle, any passengers and personal items. There is usually a maximum amount covered by the Civil Liability protection, which varies according to the rental location. In the rental agreement that you sign at the time of collection, all the details relating to the RCA will be indicated. The Civil Liability Protection applies only if you respect the terms of the rental agreement.
